A direct-fit engine block plug designed to seal the bore beneath the mechanical fuel pump on 1965–1974 Camaro, Chevelle and Nova big-block engines (396, 427, 454). This plug prevents oil and coolant weepage where the pump mounts to the block, restoring proper sealing on classic V8s. Made for durability and reliable long-term service, it’s an essential replacement part during engine rebuilds or restorations and offers straightforward installation for home mechanics and professional shops alike.
Features:
- Fitment: 1965–1974 Chevrolet Camaro, Chevelle and Nova with 396 / 427 / 454 big-block engines.
- Corrosion-resistant construction for long service life and dependable sealing.
- Seals the engine block opening under the mechanical fuel pump to prevent oil and coolant leaks.
- Direct-fit replacement that restores proper sealing during engine rebuilds and restorations.
- Easy to install with basic hand tools — ideal for restoration projects and routine maintenance.
Installation / Application:
- Difficulty: 2/5
- Estimated time: 30-60 minutes
Instructions:
- Park vehicle on a level surface, engage parking brake and disconnect the negative battery cable.
- Remove air cleaner assembly and any components blocking access to the mechanical fuel pump.
- Place a drip pan under the engine to catch any oil; remove the mechanical fuel pump from the block to expose the plug area (retain pump mounting bolts and gasket).
- Using a screwdriver/punch and hammer or an appropriate extractor, carefully remove the old block plug. Avoid damaging the bore surface.
- Clean the bore thoroughly with degreaser and a wire brush or scraper, removing old sealant and corrosion. Wipe dry with clean rags.
- If recommended for your application, apply a thin bead of block-safe RTV or compatible sealant around the plug OD. Most press-fit plugs will seal without heavy sealant — follow product guidance.
- Install the new block plug by pressing it evenly into the bore. Use a socket that matches the plug OD and a hammer or mallet to tap it flush and square with the block. Do not deform the plug.
- Reinstall the mechanical fuel pump with a new gasket, tighten mounting bolts to factory specification with a torque wrench, and reconnect any removed components.
- Reconnect the negative battery cable, start the engine, and inspect the area for leaks. Re-check fasteners after a short test drive.
