[More Info]
The Redline Restomotive® Parking Brake Cable Equalizer is a direct-fit replacement designed for 1964–1983 GM cars and trucks. This equalizer secures and aligns the parking brake cable run, balancing tension between the two rear cables so the emergency brake applies evenly and holds reliably. Made to restore OEM-style function during restorations or routine maintenance, it resists corrosion and wear for long-term durability and consistent operation. Easy to install and adjusted with standard tools, it helps prevent premature cable wear, reduces uneven brake drag, and returns a factory-correct feel to the parking brake system.
Features:
  • Fits 1964-1983 GM cars and trucks (direct replacement equalizer for many Chevrolet, GMC, Pontiac, Oldsmobile, Buick models).
  • Restores even tension between dual rear parking brake cables for reliable holding power.
  • Heavy-duty stamped steel construction with corrosion-resistant finish for long service life.
  • OEM-style fit and function for restoration projects and maintenance repairs.
  • Simple, straightforward installation with common hand tools — no specialty parts required.
  • Helps prevent cable fraying, uneven brake application, and premature component wear.
Installation / Application:
  • Difficulty: 2/5
  • Estimated time: 30-60 minutes
Suggested Tools:
  • Floor jack and jack stands
  • Wheel chocks
  • Ratchet and socket set (common sizes)
  • Combination wrenches
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Penetrating oil (if fasteners are corroded)
  • Work gloves and safety glasses
Instructions:
  1. Park vehicle on a level surface, set parking brake (if possible), place wheel chocks, then raise the rear of the vehicle with a floor jack and support safely on jack stands.
  2. Locate the parking brake cable equalizer assembly (typically underbody near the center or above the rear axle where the handbrake cable splits to the two rear cables).
  3. Apply penetrating oil to any rusted clips or fasteners and allow time to soak if needed.
  4. Remove retaining clip(s) or fasteners securing the old equalizer and disconnect the two rear cable ends and the hand/primary cable from the old unit. Note cable routing for reassembly.
  5. Compare the new equalizer to the old unit to verify fit, then install the new equalizer by connecting the two rear cables and the primary cable into their respective ports.
  6. Secure the equalizer with supplied or existing retaining clip(s)/hardware and ensure cables are seated correctly and routed without binding or sharp bends.
  7. Adjust parking brake cable tension per vehicle service procedure until the parking brake lever/handle has the correct travel and both rear brakes apply evenly.
  8. Lower the vehicle, perform a functional test by applying the parking brake on a slight incline (or attempt to roll the vehicle with the brake engaged) and re-check for even application and no unusual noise.
