This replacement Pitman Arm is a direct-fit manual steering component engineered for 1968–1974 Buick, Chevrolet, Oldsmobile and Pontiac models. It connects the steering box output shaft to the center link, converting steering box motion into lateral movement of the steering linkage. Designed to restore proper steering geometry and responsiveness, the arm provides increased durability and reliable performance compared with worn or corroded OE components. Ideal for restoration projects and routine maintenance, it helps eliminate excessive play, wandering, and uneven tire wear, returning safe, predictable steering characteristics.
Features:
- Fits 1968–1974 Buick, Chevrolet, Oldsmobile, and Pontiac models with manual steering
- Direct-fit replacement for the original pitman arm — restores proper steering geometry
- Durable forged/heat-treated steel construction resists wear and bending
- Precision machined splines and tapered bore for secure, wobble-free installation
- Prevents excessive steering play and reduces uneven tire wear
- Easy to install for mechanics and experienced DIYers — no modifications required
- Ideal for classic car restorations and preventative maintenance
Installation / Application:
- Difficulty: 3/5
- Estimated time: 45–90 minutes
Instructions:
- Park the vehicle on a level surface, chock the rear wheels and disconnect the negative battery cable.
- Raise the front of the vehicle and support securely on jack stands. Remove the front wheels if needed for access.
- Locate the pitman arm where the steering box output shaft meets the center link. Apply penetrating oil to nuts and splines and allow to soak.
- Loosen but do not remove the pitman arm retaining nut. Use a pitman arm puller to separate the pitman arm from the steering box output shaft. If necessary, use a hammer and punch to remove any rusted taper after the puller has been used.
- Remove the nut and withdraw the old pitman arm from the splined shaft. Inspect the steering box output shaft and center link ball joint for wear or damage and replace if necessary.
- Install the new pitman arm onto the splined output shaft in the same orientation as the original. Apply a light coating of grease or anti-seize to the splines if desired.
- Hand-thread the retaining nut and snug it. Torque the nut to the vehicle manufacturer’s specification using a torque wrench.
- Reattach the center link to the pitman arm if it was separated, and torque the ball joint nut to spec. Reinstall wheels if removed and lower the vehicle.
- Reconnect the battery, check steering for proper operation and free movement, and perform a test drive. Have steering alignment checked and adjusted by a professional if necessary.
