This idler arm is a direct-fit steering component designed for 1972–1981 Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Oldsmobile, and Pontiac passenger cars and light-duty trucks. It supports and stabilizes the steering linkage, maintaining correct alignment and reducing play in the steering system. Built for durability and consistent performance, this replacement idler arm restores proper steering geometry, improves handling, and helps prevent premature wear of related steering components. It’s ideal for restorations, maintenance, or upgrading worn factory parts to regain factory-like steering response and safety.
Features:
- Fits 1972-1981 Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Oldsmobile, and Pontiac (passenger cars and light-duty trucks).
- Heavy-duty steel construction with corrosion-resistant finish for long service life.
- Restores correct steering geometry and reduces steering play for improved handling.
- Factory-style bushing and grease fitting (where applicable) for reliable operation and easier maintenance.
- Direct replacement design for straightforward install without modification, suitable for restorations and maintenance.
- Helps prevent premature wear of tie rods and other steering linkage components by maintaining proper support and alignment.
Installation / Application:
- Difficulty: 3/5
- Estimated time: 45-90 minutes
Instructions:
- Park vehicle on level surface, engage parking brake, and place wheel chocks behind rear wheels.
- Raise the front of the vehicle with a jack and support securely on jack stands (or use a vehicle lift).
- Remove the front wheel on the side you are working to access the steering linkage.
- Identify the idler arm and note its orientation and mounting locations. Clean the area around mounting bolts.
- Support the steering linkage to relieve tension on the idler arm using a jack or helper as needed.
- Remove the nut and bolt or mounting hardware securing the idler arm to the frame or bracket. Retain any reusable hardware if in good condition.
- Disconnect the idler arm from the center link using an appropriate puller or separator to avoid damaging the ball stud.
- Remove the old idler arm and compare it to the replacement to verify fitment.
- Install the new idler arm in the same orientation as the original. Insert mounting bolts and start hardware by hand to ensure correct alignment.
- Torque mounting bolts and the ball stud nut to factory specifications (refer to the vehicle service manual for exact values).
- Grease the idler arm fitting if equipped, using a grease gun and manufacturer-recommended lubricant.
- Reinstall the wheel, lower the vehicle, and torque the wheel lug nuts to specification.
- Perform a basic steering check: ensure smooth movement and no excessive play. Have a professional alignment performed if steering pull, vibration, or uneven tire wear is present.
